Finally, popped the Steel Panther cherry! They’ve been on my list for a long time! I grew up in the 80s and wish I could have stayed there, so walking into a Steel Panther show for the first time had me feeling quite nostalgic. The big hair wigs, spiked belts/wristbands, the battle vest (never go out of style), the leopard prints, and mesh shirts had us wishing we dressed up too! Now, we know for the next show! When I arrived at the photo pit, I was warned to be prepared to get roasted by the band. Oh, hell yeah, I’m ready! I had a big lens and was expecting some kind of ‘size matters’ dig, so I was a little disappointed when we didn’t get roasted at all.
They kicked off with “Never Too Late (to Get Some Pussy)” and the crowd was so fired up singing every word! The one thing that I noticed throughout the entire show was very few cell phones were up. I know it’s an older fan base (I’m in that group, too) but still, it was pretty awesome to see fans just being in the moment instead of watching through their phones.
I gathered from friends who had seen them before and watching the fans that they do certain things every show.
One of those things is to pull a girl up on stage and they “write” and sing a song to her. She was a good sport, even when they asked her to show some titties. She motioned a big nope! They respected that. The band does talk a lot in between songs. They were bashing Rick Allen, (drummer for Def Leppard) about him losing his arm in an accident while drunk and high, and the same thing almost happened to Tiger Woods which was the intro to “Just Like Tiger Woods.”
Near the end of the show, they invited all the girls to come up on stage. I don’t know what I was thinking after what I had already seen, but I was encouraging Kaiya to go up there. In my defense, I was just thinking of Suicidal Tendencies or Pennywise when they invited fans on stage. As the girls were walking on, Michael Starr pointed to one girl “Hey I know you!” She looked surprised, but happy, and then he said “From the clinic!” Haha. The girls were up there for two songs, and we saw lots of titties, just like in the 80s.
We had so much fun, laughing at their jokes and lyrics. They are a parody band, but they are really talented too. If you like a good roast, great music, and raunchy everything, go to the next Steel Panther show!
