Spending an Evening Finding Hidden Meanings with RuPaul

Writer: Heather VandemarkHeather Vandemark

RuPaul

The Queen of Drag RuPaul closed out his book tour for his new book, The House of Hidden Meanings, released on March 5th. We saw RuPaul on The Observatory North Park website and knew we had to be there. We weren’t sure if it was a concert, Drag Race, or just a big drag party. We didn’t care, we just wanted to see RuPaul live in person. Turns out it was the last night of his book tour promoting The House of Hidden Meanings, appropriately ending in his hometown of San Diego. The Observatory North Park is one of our favorite venues. There is a parking garage right across the street, so we feel safe. It’s also free if you’re going to the event. It’s a beautiful theater and every single staff member is friendly and helpful. It’s always a pleasant experience.

RuPaul sashayed out on stage and everyone jumped to their feet for a standing ovation. RuPaul took us on a journey of his formidable years growing up in San Diego, from his first puff on a cigarette to first boyfriend and how he starts his day at age 64. There was a young kid sitting in the front row named Eli, so we got the PG RuPaul. He said he was going to watch his mouth, but sometimes bad words might fall out. They did fall out, only a couple of times, and you could see Eli up there losing his mind.

We know him as the gorgeous Supermodel of the world, TV host, performer, but on this night he was a motivational speaker and gave us life skills. I thought we were there for entertainment and we walked away with a new POV on our life. He has a photo of himself when was 7 years old to remind himself who he is taking care of everyday. I remember doing a guided meditation like this, but seeing 7 year old you everyday is a whole different level of healing that child. A few of the other things that hit me and will forever have an impact on daily life:

  • Health is Wealth. We have nothing if we don’t have our health. Holding grudges and anger manifests into bad things in your body, makes you sick. Health is Wealth.

  • Let go of the victim identity

  • Look at the darkness, but don’t stare at it.

  • Unraveling the debris of your consciousness - think about that for a minute.

He didn’t talk about politics, other than to say our secret weapon is our joy. That hit me! It’s hard to stay up and positive in the current status of the world, but that’s what they want. Love and laugh! You have to hear that RuPaul laugh live in person once in your life. That laugh was the best thing of the night and seriously healing. Live like RuPaul and throw a pair of rollerskates in the back of your car in case you happen to come across the perfect place to skate. Take the literally or figuratively

I will definitely be buying this book. I felt so inspired walking out of there that I want more!
