Nu-Metal fans, are you ready!? After being teased on social media, very briefly, the lineup for the inaugural year of Sick New World is here! This is essentially a more metal version of this years emo-focused When We Were Young Festival. This “nu” fest will be headlined by some of the biggest names in the late ’90s and early 2000s nu-metal scene including System Of A Down, Korn, Deftones, and Incubus as well as Evanescence, Turnstile, Chevelle, Papa Roach, Flyleaf with Lacey Sturm, Ministry, Spiritbox, Kittie, Soulfly, P.O.D, Sevendust, Hoobastank Stank, Alien Ant Farm, Fever 333, Lacuna Coil, Ho99o9, Body Count, and many more!
Despite some recent rumors circulating that System Of A Down were planning something big for 2023, it seems that lead singer, Serj Tankian, is in no rush to commit to any more major SOAD activity. He even suggested he might be done with full tours for the band due to some recent health issues. Serj explained, "I've got certain issues that I'm getting over that are health issues that are affecting my mobility," he adds. "I mean, I walk fine and I'm able to do stuff and I could perform. But the travel of a tour really, really affects me at this point. That and, to be honest with you, it's not in my creative purview, you know? So a show here and there we've done and might still do. But as far as doing a specific thing, it's not really something where I'm at right now." System of a Down was one of my favorite bands growing up (still is) and I’ve always wanted to see them in a festival setting, so I’m super excited for this!
Also featured on this line up are a shit ton of reunions!
Recently reactivated Flyleaf will be performing with their original lead singer Lacey Sturm! Lacey was a founding member of Flyleaf and was with the band from 2002 through 2012. She has two major hits with Flyleaf in “All Around Me” and “I’m So Sick.” When Sturm left the band, Kirsten May took over as vocalist and appeared on 2014’s album “Between the Stars.” The band announced a hiatus in 2016, and May left the band at that point, too. Sick New World is the official reunion announcement of Flyleaf! Coal Chamber, who hasn't performed live since 2015, is also reunited! Coal Chamber have been broken up for several years now with no indication of a reunion and even previously said they will not be having anymore reunions. Also playing will be Sister of Mercy who hasn’t played a US show in 15 years and Death Grips will be playing their first live show since 2019!
Prior to the official festival announcement on November 7th, many of the mentioned bands posted teasers on social media, hinting that they would be a part of the initial Sick New World lineup. Just like when the When We Were Young Festival was announced, I thought this was a joke at first. If it sells anything like When We Were Young, which it most likely will, expect some more dates to be added! That fest started out as a one-day event, but two extra days were added with nearly the same lineups each day.
The event will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds in Las Vegas, Nevada. Presale starts on Friday, November 11th at 10am. All tickets start at $19.99 down, so be sure to get them before they sell out! Get your tickets here!
