Meshuggah Kicks Off Their Tour in San Diego

Meshuggah, In Flames, and White Chapel kicked off their tour in San Diego with a sold out show! SOMA is a great venue for mosh pits and crowd surfing! The staff is pretty cool and they always have lots of security, so they will catch your body as you are hurled over the rail.

Whitechapel kicked off the night with “Let Me Burn” and ended their six-song set with “The Saw is the Law,” both of which are off their Our Endless War album. I assumed with their name they were from England, but they are actually from Knoxville, Tennessee. They are, however, named after the town of Whitechapel in London, where the murders of Jack the Ripper took place.

In Flames started with “Foregone Pt 1,” “Pinball Map,” and “Darker Times.” This was a hometown show for drummer Tanner Wayne, who joined the band in 2018. The crowd cheered when Tanner walked out to his kit. Hometown family crowd! In doing that research,  I also discovered we share a birthday, May 18! In between songs, lead vocalist Anders Fridén was dissing on the San Diego crowd quite a bit. As a San Diego native, I can’t really blame him.

We’ve heard from many different artists asking “what’s up with San Diego?”

Anders said, “You’re really quiet for an American crowd, but you are all stoned so you have an excuse.” There was a pretty decently sized mosh pit in the middle, but definitely an interesting crowd. As a photographer, I was trying to maneuver my way to the back of the room to be out of the way and most of the fans weren’t being too helpful with that, some even tried to block me. I get it if I was making the push to the front, but I just wanted out of the way, so weird. Anders also added that he was glad he was up on stage with a microphone because if he wasn’t, he would be in the back with a beer in hand. They ended with “Take This Life,” as he introduced the song he said “The world is crazy. We need good vibes, people”

Meshuggah knows how to build anticipation. They opened with “Broken Cog” which was an amazing intro. This was my first time seeing them live, so I don’t know if that’s their usual song, but I loved it! It really set the vibe. There were a few songs they hadn’t played in a long time and you could tell there were a lot of old-school fans in there because the beginning of those songs would start and everyone would yell. They played “Perpetual Black Second” for the first time since 2017, “Electric Red” for the first time since 2011, and “Humiliative” for the first time since 2009. This tour is just kicking and will go on until December 16th. With several sold out dates already, check out the shows below and grab your tickets now!
