The lineup for Inkcarceration 2023 is finally here! The 5th annual Music and Tattoo Festival returns to Mansfield, Ohio on July 14th through 16th! This three-day fest takes place on the grounds of the infamous Ohio State Reformatory. I’m obsessed with ghost stories and everything else spooky, so the Ohio State Reformatory is a place that I’ve been wanting to visit for a really long time now. It has this sort of charm to it that makes me drawn to it more than other places.
This year’s lineup includes headliners Limp Bizkit, Pantera, and Slipknot with support from Volbeat, Highly Suspect, Lamb of God, In This Moment, Motionless in White, Megadeth, Bush, Flyleaf (with original lineup), Asking Alexandria, P.O.D, Fit For a King, We Came As Romans, The Ghost Inside, Memphis May Fire, Wage War, Crown The Empire, Fame on Fire, and more!
“We’re celebrating our 5th anniversary with a killer lineup representing each year of Inkcarceration, as well as over 50 bands who are new to the festival,” says Dan Janssen, General Manager and Co-Creator of Inkcarceration. “This year is all about serving an incredible experience to our fans that show up for us year after year, and we can’t wait to celebrate together with them in July!”
In addition to the music, you can get some Ink!
Inkcarceration will be holding a huge tattoo convention on the grounds that will feature over 65 artists. You can book a tattoo with an artist now to secure your spot, but if you’re more spontaneous like me, most artists will be accepting walk-ups as well. There will also be nightly tattoo competitions that will be hosted by Big Brother alumni Jennifer “Jenncity” Arroyo and judged Caleb Neff, Brian Adamson, and Matt Helton
Something else really exciting about this fest is that it offers self-guided tours around the Reformatory! I’ve always been so intrigued with this place, because of its history and the stories I’ve heard. Architect Levi T. Scofield used a cathedral style when designing the Reformatory. The architecture is gothic in nature, invoking the feeling of castles. Conditions in the prison, mixed with its design, earned the Reformatory its nickname, “Dracula’s Castle”. The East Cell Block is one of the largest free-standing groups of cells in the world and is said to hold the most paranormal activity in the Reformatory. One of the more well-known stories is of Cell 13. It was in that cell an inmate, James Lockhart, covered himself in turpentine, set himself on fire and consequently died. It’s said that he still haunts that cell and his spirit is considered to be the most violent in the prison. Not only is the Ohio State Reformatory haunted, it’s also been used as a filming location in multiple Hollywood films, such as The Shawshank Redemption and Air Force One.
