After being teased all week, it’s official! The inaugural year of Power Trip Festival is coming to California this fall! This fest will feature some of the biggest names in Metal including, AC/DC, Guns n’ Roses, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, and Tool. Earlier this week, the bands all posted teasers for Power Trip, which was described as an evolution of the Desert Trip festival that took place in fall of 2016. Coachella promoter, Goldenvoice, brought in six big names of classic rock to Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, the same site where Coachella and Stagecoach are held every spring. It ran for two weekends, and then it was done. Now Goldenvoice is bringing back this concept, but with icons of hard rock and heavy metal!
Power Trip Festival will mark AC/DC’s first concert since December 2016, which featured Axl Rose as their singer while frontman Brian Johnson recovered from hearing loss. It is still unclear who, other than guitarist Angus Young, will be in the band’s lineup for the festival, though Johnson did sing on their 2020 album, Power Up.
Power Trip will also mark Ozzy Osbourne’s first full show since New Year’s Eve 2018.
Shortly after that show, he slipped and fell in the middle of the night aggravating an old injury. He has been training to get back into performance shape ever since and has been performing one-offs here and there in recent years. Last year, he made a surprise appearance at England’s Commonwealth Games for a performance with his Black Sabbath bandmate, Tony Iommi, and also played the halftime of a Rams-Bills game. In January, Osbourne announced he was retiring from touring following years of health issues and surgeries. Ozzy said in a previous statement, "Never would I have imagined that my touring days would have ended this way. My team is currently coming up with ideas for where I will be able to perform without having to travel from city to city and country to country.”
Metallica, who’s releasing their newest album, 72 Seasons, next month (and also released the album’s title track today), already have a world tour planned for this year, as does Guns N’ Roses. Iron Maiden’s only dates this year are in Europe for their Future Past tour and Tool just has four other festival dates on the books (Welcome To Rockville, Sonic Temple, Louder Than Life, and Aftershock).
