Vibing With Godsmack in Los Angeles

Godsmack brought their Vibez Tour to Los Angeles’s Youtube Theater on April 10th! The opening act was Bastian da Cruz, a beautiful singer-songwriter. A little different than we are used to for a Godsmack show, but he fits great for the vibe of this tour. He said he couldn’t get a recording contract because he didn’t have enough followers. Go check him out, you know he’s great opening for Godsmack!

What is the Vibez tour? Is it going to be story-telling? Is it all acoustic?

We were chatting with fans before the show and they were confused by the seating even at the front, no GA, no pit? The stage was set a little differently, instead of shooting flames, there were candles for a more intimate setting, and gargoyles on the sides, I believe, from the Awake tour. Celebrating over 25 years together, I love that they brought a little of the past to the set. I just recently watched I Stand Alone: The Sully Erna Story, so I was even more excited than ever to see this tour. When you know some of the backstories of how a band got where they are, you feel the music a little differently. Sully said when people asked if this was going to be storytelling tour, he said “Fuck no!” the stories are in the music, but he did tell us a few stories.

Being a photographer and up close, we are fortunate enough to see up-close details that might otherwise be missed from farther away. Sully’s mic stand is beautifully decorated with pentacles, salts, The Empress card, and a few other things that set the vibes. The next thing I noticed was two more people on the stage, Chris Decato on piano and Tim Theriault, guitarist. Sully said Tim is a classic rock encyclopedia, so people would yell out a random song and Tim played it! They started off with the Pink Floyd cover “Time” and then went right into “Love-Sex-Hate-Pain”. They were rocking electric, not acoustic, but different than I’ve ever heard and it was SO good! After taking my photos, I found my seat with Kaiya and just absorbed the music, the words, being there with my daughter, the Vibez and nothing else in the world matters but that moment.

Sully sat down with an acoustic guitar, talking about music, how we hear it and how we interpret it.

He started playing something familiar, not a Godsmack song, but “Nothing Else Matters” with a Boston twist, “Couldn’t be much more from the Hawt”.  Love that accent! They played some deep cuts, I won’t spoil them here, in case you want to be surprised, but they are absolutely beautiful live. Is there an instrument that Sully doesn’t play? He has his voice, plays guitar, bongos, drums, piano, and even harmonica all in one show. Sully sat down at the piano that has “ScarsFoundation.org” across it.  Please go check out their website and how they have helped so many people. Knowing you’re not alone and there is actually help from people that have been through it, is amazing.

Every Godsmack show I’ve seen has been amazing, but this Vibez tour is one you can’t miss. The night felt like we were just hanging out with friends, sharing stories of love, pain, healing, maybe shedding a few tears (even the tough guys), and laughs.
