Fear Factory kicked off their tour in San Diego’s Brick by Brick, the venue where many of us local San Diegans have grown up going to shows. The venue has changed over the years, getting expanded, adding better light, and even getting a little barricade in front that I want to call a photo pit, but I think it might be more about keeping drinks off the stage.
I first heard of Fear Factory when I was covering NAIRMA awards in 2016 where the band won three awards: Outstanding Male Fronted Band, Outstanding Live Performance Signed, and Outstanding Album Signed. At that time, I was a newbie music photojournalist. It was my first red carpet, a total whirlwind, and I didn’t even realize all that talent in the room until years later looking back. So I’m a little late to the Fear Factory fan party, but I’m here now!
The venue was packed, I believe it was sold out!
Sometimes we go to shows and the vibe is just weird, but this felt like I walked into a house party with all my friends. The fans this night were so fucking cool and I really think it carries over from the band. Jose ‘Metal Ambassador” Mangin, who’s a huge fan of Fear Factory, was in the house. Guitarist, Dino Cazares hung out with Jose, the week before doing Sirius XM Octane takeover. Milo Silvestro, new vocalist, has a story like the movie Rock Star. Fear Factory had been auditioning hundreds of vocalists when Dino saw a video of Milo singing Fear Factory songs. Boom, Milo gets his dream job! Like I said I’m a new fan, and stories like that are what intrigue me and want to know more. I believe a new album is in the works to be released at the end of 2024 and it will be the first album with Milo. What I do know is they sounded amazing, the fans were great, I had a blast!
After the show, Fear Factory was at the merch table with a huge line. They stayed until the very last fan and treated everyone like they were the only fan. If you’ve followed me for a while, you know that even if I know nothing about the music, but I see the bands treating fans like that, I’m an instant fan!
